Scripture
1 John 3:1-3 (ESV)
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears[a] we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
Devotional #88: Adoption, Children of God!
When God justified us in Christ, he cleansed us from our sins. And when he adopted us in Christ, he set the parameters by which we are to interact with him. Paul says in Galatians 4:7 that we are no longer slaves, but sons and John calls us to Behold and see how great is the love of God, that we should be called his children.
If God only bestowed upon us the legal standing of justified, we would still be grateful and ecstatic. No longer destined for eternal punishment, we would be his servants forever worshipping him. We would say along with the Psalmist, “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness” (Psalm 84:10).
Yet, the Lord has changed our status to that of children and all the rights and privileges of belonging to him and to the covenant family of God.

Questions
- How do you relate to God? Do you see yourself as a child of God?
- What are some privileges of being a child of God?
Scripture
Galatians 4:1-7 (ESV)
1 I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave,[a] though he is the owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. 3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles[b] of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
Devotional #89: Adoption, Gift of Prayer
The doctrine of adoption is central to our understanding of prayer. We do not approach God as someone to be feared. We do not wait to see if God will allow us to enter his throne room to speak with him. Rather, we pray to the Lord as our Father in heaven. We have access to our Father 24/7 and are able to speak to him freely whenever! This is rooted deep within the work of the Holy Spirit. We can call out to God, Abba, Father! (Galatians 4:6) because the Spirit has showed us that we are his children. Approach the throne room boldly and may you commune with your Father in Heaven.
Questions
- How would you describe your prayer life? Do you pray to God like He is your Father?
- How do other religions pray? Do they relate to God as a Father?
Scripture
Galatians 4:1-7 & Romans 8:16-17 (ESV)

16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Devotional #90: Adoption, Inheritance in Heaven
Another benefit of adoption is our inheritance waiting for us. We will not be slaves in the new heaven and new earth, but sons and daughters. What do we inherit? Everything! Do you want to Atlanta? It’s yours. Do you want to enjoy golf forever? It’s yours! “So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours” (1 Corinthians 3:21). We will enjoy all these things in Christ forever and ever! So don’t fret about the things of today. Don’t envy those who have more worldly possession than you. You will have it all!
