Ezekiel 1:1-3 & 2 Kings 24:8-17 (ESV)
1 In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the exiles by the Chebar canal, the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.[a] 2 On the fifth day of the month (it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin), 3 the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the Chebar canal, and the hand of the Lord was upon him there.

8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. 9 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father had done.
10 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up to Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. 11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to the city while his servants were besieging it, 12 and Jehoiachin the king of Judah gave himself up to the king of Babylon, himself and his mother and his servants and his officials and his palace officials. The king of Babylon took him prisoner in the eighth year of his reign 13 and carried off all the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king's house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold in the temple of the Lord, which Solomon king of Israel had made, as the Lord had foretold. 14 He carried away all Jerusalem and all the officials and all the mighty men of valor, 10,000 captives, and all the craftsmen and the smiths. None remained, except the poorest people of the land. 15 And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon. The king's mother, the king's wives, his officials, and the chief men of the land he took into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. 16 And the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon all the men of valor, 7,000, and the craftsmen and the metal workers, 1,000, all of them strong and fit for war. 17 And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin's uncle, king in his place, and changed his name to Zedekiah.

Devotional #91 - Ezekiel: "A Prophet In Exile"
In 597 BC, Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon sieged the city of Jerusalem. Eventually the Holy City fell, and Jehoiachin, the king of Judah, his household, and the elite of the population, were taken into exile. Only the poor remained (2 Kings 24:8-17).
What a confusing time for the people of God! God had promised Israel the land of Canaan, but due to their disobedience, the Babylonians came as God’s instrument of justice to strip away their land and force the people to live in Babylon (present day Iraq).
Ezekiel was one of those people. He served as a priest at the temple and during the 5th year of exile (Ezekiel 1:2), the word of the Lord came to Him. He would now be a prophet priest who would speak the words of God to the exiled nation.

- What happened to Jerusalem after King Jehoiachin was taken to exile? What happened to the Temple? (2 Kings 24:8-17)
- Why would the exiles feel confused at this moment?
Scripture
Ezekiel 1:4-29 (ESV)
4 As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud, with brightness around it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, as it were gleaming metal.[a] 5 And from the midst of it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had a human likeness, 6 but each had four faces, and each of them had four wings. 7 Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf's foot. And they sparkled like burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. And the four had their faces and their wings thus: 9 their wings touched one another. Each one of them went straight forward, without turning as they went. 10 As for the likeness of their faces, each had a human face. The four had the face of a lion on the right side, the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and the four had the face of an eagle. 11 Such were their faces. And their wings were spread out above. Each creature had two wings, each of which touched the wing of another, while two covered their bodies. 12 And each went straight forward. Wherever the spirit[b] would go, they went, without turning as they went. 13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches moving to and fro among the living creatures. And the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. 14 And the living creatures darted to and fro, like the appearance of a flash of lightning.
15 Now as I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the earth beside the living creatures, one for each of the four of them.[c] 16 As for the appearance of the wheels and their construction: their appearance was like the gleaming of beryl. And the four had the same likeness, their appearance and construction being as it were a wheel within a wheel. 17 When they went, they went in any of their four directions[d] without turning as they went. 18 And their rims were tall and awesome, and the rims of all four were full of eyes all around. 19 And when the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them; and when the living creatures rose from the earth, the wheels rose. 20 Wherever the spirit wanted to go, they went, and the wheels rose along with them, for the spirit of the living creatures[e] was in the wheels. 21 When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those rose from the earth, the wheels rose along with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
22 Over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads. 23 And under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward another. And each creature had two wings covering its body. 24 And when they went, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many waters, like the sound of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army. When they stood still, they let down their wings. 25 And there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads. When they stood still, they let down their wings.
26 And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire;[f] and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. 27 And upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him.[g] 28 Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around.
Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

Devotional #92 - Ezekiel: God’s Chariot Throne & The Cherubim
Ezekiel gives us one of the most awesome pictures of God’s “chariot-throne.” As Ezekiel looked, he saw four creatures that appeared to be carrying a throne (1:26). These creatures are the “cherubim” (plural for cherub in Hebrew). You may have seen pictures of the two cherubs depicted in Raphael’s Sistine Madonna. They look cute with their little wings and baby round faces. However, the cherubim are imposing creatures whose primary role is to be God’s military escort. Think of them as God’s “Secret Service.” Their first appearance was in Genesis 1:24, when God placed them to guard the entrance of the Garden of the Eden after Adam and Eve’s expulsion.
Some highlights of their appearance. (1) They have four faces: human, lion, ox and eagle. (2) They never turn when they move since each face looks to each of the four compass directions. (3) They have two sets of wings. (4) Their appearance is like burning coals of fire!

Devotional #93 - Ezekiel: "Glory of God"
One of the pressing themes in the Bible is God’s “covenant presence.” We know that God is omnipresent and that no one can hide from him.
Psalm 139:7-10
7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.
Yet God’s covenantal dwelling was the place where he would reside as King over his people. Exodus 40 speaks of the Tabernacle that was built by the Israelites as a dwelling place of the Lord. And indeed Exodus 40:25 speaks of the glory of the Lord filling the tabernacle. God was with Israel.
When Solomon built the Temple, God’s glory filled that place and from that time until the exile, God would rule, speak, and forgive from that Holy Place.
Can you imagine how surprised Ezekiel must have been to see the Glory of God in Babylon? (Ezekiel 1:28). We can understand this in two ways. (1) God no longer has a home in Jerusalem and the exiled nation is to be judged. (2) God is present with the exilic nation, showing his enduring love and promise to his people. In fact, the theme of judgement and grace will be strewn throughout the rest of this book. We too need to understand that God is both holy and merciful.
